Start quiet

Turn your system volume down before the first test and raise it from there. Sine tones and noise carry far more energy than music at the same setting, and a sustained high-frequency tone at volume is unpleasant at best.

Hold a single frequency or waveform

A driver that buzzes or rattles at one frequency but not its neighbours has a mechanical fault. Sawtooth and square are the most demanding.

Listen for the sound dropping out, or for a buzz that appears and passes. Note the frequency on screen when it happens — that is where the fault is. Small speakers genuinely produce nothing below about 100 Hz, which is not a fault.
